Giving someone Hetalia and asking them to write something serious is like handing someone a picture of Spongebob Squarepants and telling them to create a Van Gogh-worthy portrait. Possible, but not probable. There’s certainly people out there who can take animes, they can take pairings, they can take just basic things with some silly stuff and turn them into fanfics or drabbles that tear at your heart or make you want to cry. There are definitely people who can do this, but even fewer who can do it well.

Charljordan is one of those people. The first fic I came across by her was, I believe, “Signs of Affection”. I was intrigued. Who was this writer, that with the same twenty-six letters and the same words as the rest of us, created this story? I was very, very interested. Somehow she made Greece and Japan very serene, very observant, and even though I was merely reading the story I saw very clearly the exact scene depicted. I could see this peaceful garden. I could see Japan sitting there with Pochi in his lap, blushing and turning red and kneading his hands as Greece blew kisses at him. And I could see the look of determination on Japan’s face when he straddled Greece on the ground.

After reading it, I do as I always do when stumbling across good fics and I basically stalked her gallery for a little bit. It was, to say, an awakening. Up until then I’d only read ‘cheap’ fics, silly fics, silliness with some attempt at deeper meaning with ‘so-so’ success.

And then there was suddenly BAM! This writer! She had war stories and grungy carnival AUs and sex scenes and everything I missed in other fanfiction writers. There was poems she wrote mixed in with enthralling stories with random R-18 scenes, and love confessions and every alternate universe and plot twist you could think of. Did I mention the first lemon scene I ever read all the way through was in “Momentum”, by her? Hey, and she brings some humor into intense, lusty scenes – “Corporal cat twitched her ears. They were so loud every time.”

What also really impresses me is how intelligent she is. Charljordan writes with a voice and with such historical backgrounds that you get the impression of reading a story written by a history major. Her writer’s notes reference back to history and to a wide range of knowledge, and she is ALWAYS willing to tl;dr with you if you’re willing. (I should know, I’ve nattered at her and she’s responded with equally long responses).

And even though she’s fiercely intelligent and a stunning writer, she’s also hilarious. The “Hell’s Kitchen” had me in hysterics and the mislabeled “Cork rings” was another one of the one that made me double over with laughter.

If you read my stories before I came across Charljordan and the ones afterwards, there is a change. It’s not always visible but it’s there – a little shifting from the mainstream voice of fanfiction to Charljordan’s serious, tranquil style. At least, I like to think. From Charljordan I saw a side of fanfiction that should be more explored, a side of serious fics on serious topics all taken from a silly anime.

All in all, Charljordan, I applaud you for having the most unique voice and being the most intelligent fanfiction writer I have ever met. Hats off to you, m’dear.

There are lots of things I could say but… I don’t know how to word it properly. But this definitely made my day 9000x better :’D
